What Topic Clusters Are

A topic cluster is a group of semantically related pages organized around one central pillar page. The pillar page covers the broad topic at a high level. Spoke pages cover specific sub-topics in depth. All spokes link back to the pillar; the pillar links to all spokes.

Topic clusters serve three SEO functions:

  1. Topical authority signaling — collective entity coverage proves expertise to Google
  2. Internal PageRank concentration — interconnected pages amplify authority
  3. Query coverage expansion — each spoke targets distinct sub-queries the pillar cannot serve alone

Pillar Page Design

The pillar page covers the entire topic at moderate depth — comprehensive enough to be the authoritative hub, not so deep that it duplicates every spoke.

Pillar page criteria:

  • Covers 10-15 sub-topics the site addresses
  • Each sub-topic gets 150-250 words (not the full treatment — that's the spoke's job)
  • Includes a link to the spoke page for every sub-topic covered
  • Internally linked from homepage and main navigation
  • Length: 3,000-5,000 words

H2 structure: One H2 per cluster topic. Each H2 section → 150-250 words → internal link to spoke with descriptive anchor.

Spoke Page Design

Each spoke page covers exactly ONE sub-topic from the pillar, at full depth.

Spoke page criteria:

  • Covers one specific attribute/sub-topic only (narrow scope)
  • Goes deeper than the pillar's treatment of this topic
  • Contains 1 internal link back to the pillar (in main content body, not footer)
  • May link to adjacent spokes (only if strong contextual overlap)
  • Length: 1,500-3,000 words depending on topic depth

Cluster Sequencing (Publication Order)

Publish in this sequence to maximize authority signal:

  1. Publish PILLAR page first (establishes the hub)
  2. Publish highest-volume spokes 2-4 within 2 weeks
  3. Publish remaining spokes over following 4-8 weeks
  4. Update PILLAR with links to new spokes as they publish

Do NOT publish all spokes simultaneously. Staggered publication signals organic editorial process.
