What Internal Linking Does for Rankings

Internal links perform four functions:

  1. Pass PageRank — distribute authority from high-authority pages to target pages
  2. Signal topical relationships — anchor text declares the relationship between linked pages
  3. Assist crawlability — Googlebot discovers pages through internal links
  4. Shape user behavior — guide users to pages that convert

Weak internal linking is one of the most common reasons technically sound pages fail to rank — they are either orphaned or receiving irrelevant anchor text.

The Reasonable Surfer Model

Google's Reasonable Surfer patent (US8117183B1) establishes that not all links on a page pass equal PageRank. A link's PageRank pass-through depends on its click probability:

  • Navigation links (primary nav, breadcrumbs): high click probability → high PageRank pass-through
  • Contextual body links: high click probability when anchor is relevant → high pass-through
  • Footer links: low click probability → low pass-through
  • Sidebar links: medium click probability → medium pass-through
  • Image links without alt text: low click probability → low pass-through

Strategic implication: contextual body links from high-authority pages to target pages are the highest-value internal links. Footer and sidebar links should reinforce but not substitute for body links.

Anchor Text Optimization Rules

| Rule | Rationale | |------|-----------| | Anchor must describe what the linked page is about | Google reads anchor as a label for the target page | | Exact-match anchor to target page's primary keyword — use sparingly (1-2 times) | Over-optimization signals manipulation | | Descriptive partial-match anchor most common (60-70% of links to a page) | Natural and effective | | Generic anchor ("click here", "learn more") — eliminate | Zero topical signal | | Branded anchor — use for homepage links | Natural pattern | | Long-tail anchor (3-5 words) for supporting pages | Captures topical nuance |

Topic Cluster Internal Linking Structure

For every topic cluster, establish a clear linking pattern:

Hub-and-Spoke model:

  • Pillar page links TO every spoke page (with relevant anchor text)
  • Every spoke page links BACK to the pillar page
  • Spoke pages link to adjacent spoke pages with high contextual overlap only
  • No spoke-to-spoke links between pages with unrelated attributes

Koray-method enhancement:

  • Outer section pages link to core section pages (directional authority flow)
  • Core section pages do NOT link back to outer section pages
  • Quality nodes receive the highest number of inbound internal links across the site

Orphan Page Audit

An orphan page has zero internal links pointing to it. Orphan pages:

  • Are rarely crawled (Googlebot finds pages through links)
  • Receive zero PageRank from the rest of the site
  • Rank only if they have strong external link signals

Finding orphans:

  1. Export all URLs from your sitemap
  2. Export all internal link targets from a site crawl (use LibreCrawl)
  3. Find URLs in the sitemap that appear in zero internal link target sets
  4. These are orphans — fix by adding contextual body links from relevant pages

Link Depth Optimization

Pages more than 3 clicks from the homepage receive significantly reduced crawl frequency. For any page that should rank:

  • Homepage → Category/pillar page (1 click)
  • Category/pillar page → Service/article page (2 clicks)
  • Service/article page → Supporting detail page (3 clicks)

No money page should be more than 3 clicks from the homepage.

Internal Link Audit Checklist

  • [ ] Every money page receives 3+ contextual body links from relevant pages
  • [ ] Zero orphan pages in money-page tier
  • [ ] Anchor text varies across linking pages (no repetitive exact-match anchors)
  • [ ] Navigation links reinforce top-tier money pages
  • [ ] No topic cluster spokes linking to unrelated clusters
  • [ ] Link depth: all money pages within 3 clicks of homepage
