HCU Recovery & Remediation Checklist
When a site has been hit by the Helpful Content System, apply these recovery tactics:
Immediate Actions
- Audit sitewide content ratio -- Identify and remove/improve pages with thin or unhelpful content. The HCU is a sitewide signal; a high proportion of unhelpful content drags down the entire domain.
- Prune low-value pages -- Noindex or consolidate pages that exist only for search traffic with no real user value.
- Kill automation artifacts -- Remove any content that was mass-produced via AI without human editing, review, or added expertise.
- Fix keyword-stuffed titles -- Replace search-engine-first titles with descriptive, helpful ones.
- Remove date manipulation -- Stop updating dates on pages without substantial content changes.
Quality Improvement
- Add first-hand experience -- Inject real practitioner experience, case results, original photos, and specific details that only someone who has done the work would know.
- Strengthen author signals -- Add bylines, author bio pages with credentials, and links to external proof of expertise.
- Satisfy intent completely -- Ensure readers do NOT need to search again after reading your page. The content should be the last click.
- Improve engagement metrics -- Focus on dwell time, scroll depth, and reducing pogo-sticking back to the SERP.
Monitoring
- Track recovery over weeks -- The HCU classifier runs continuously; improvements may take weeks or months to be reflected in rankings.
- Measure content quality ratio -- Aim for 90%+ of pages being genuinely helpful. Even 10% low-quality pages can trigger the sitewide classifier.
