Avalanche Theory

Avalanche Theory is a ranking tier identification method based on actual traffic data. Instead of guessing keyword difficulty, you identify the natural ranking tier of your site by analyzing GSC data.

Process:

  1. Pull 3 months of GSC data for all queries
  2. Sort by impressions (not clicks)
  3. Identify the position range where 80% of your impressions fall — this is your natural tier
  4. Target keywords where competition operates AT or JUST ABOVE your natural tier (KGR+1 or KGR+2)

Tier math:

  • KGR (Keyword Golden Ratio): allintitle count / monthly search volume < 0.25
  • KGR+1: your natural tier's average position + 1 difficulty level
  • KGR+2: two difficulty levels above your natural tier (stretch target)

Why it works: Algorithm updates re-sort ranking tiers. Sites that ranked above their natural tier get dropped. Sites that ranked AT their natural tier stay. By identifying and staying in your natural tier, core updates cause minimal disruption.

EEAT Trust Signals (Experience Says Yes)

  • Author name matches a real person with verifiable online presence
  • Author bio includes specific credentials (license number, certification, years)
  • Author has written 10+ articles on the same topic (topical expertise signal)

  • Business hours listed
  • Privacy policy and terms of service linked from footer
  • SSL across entire site (no mixed content)

Content Trust Signals

  • Publication date and "last updated" date visible
  • Sources cited with links to authoritative domains
  • Images with alt text matching content (not stock photos with generic alts)

Real Business Checklist

Google's quality raters use "Real Business" criteria to assess trust. For every client site, verify:

  • Ranking significantly above its natural tier (GSC data shows)
  • Top traffic pages have no author identified
  • Site has 20%+ of pages with duplicate or near-duplicate content
  • Domain is less than 12 months old but ranking for competitive terms
  • Most inbound links are from directories, not editorial sources

Recovery Strategies for Algorithm-Hit Sites

  1. Identify the hit date — cross-reference traffic drop with Google update calendar
  2. Diagnose the cause — Panda (quality), HCU (helpful content), core update (authority), manual action (spam)
  3. Tier analysis — was the site ranking above its natural tier?
  4. Content consolidation — merge thin pages, noindex low-quality sections
  5. Trust signal audit — run Real Business and Real Website checklists
