How Content Decay Happens
Google's QDF (Query Deserves Freshness) algorithm assigns freshness scores to queries based on how time-sensitive the topic is. High-QDF queries surface recently published content even when older content has more backlinks and authority. Low-QDF queries are stable.
Content decay occurs when:
- A page that ranked well begins to lose positions as newer competing pages publish on the same topic
- The page's statistical data, examples, or recommendations become outdated (factual freshness)
- The

Decay Detection Signals (from GSC)
Signal 1: Position creep without traffic correlation. GSC shows average position declining from, say, 5.2 to 8.7 over 90 days while impressions remain similar. The page is still discovered but losing the click competition.
Signal 2: Click-through rate decline on stable impressions. Page impressions hold flat but CTR drops — competitor snippets becoming more compelling (possibly newer content with updated dates displayed in SERP).
Signal 3: Page in high-QDF query category. If your target query contains: year references ("2024 costs"), recent events, technology topics, prices, regulations — the query is high-QDF and freshness decay accelerates.
Content Decay Monitoring Protocol

- Export position data for all tracked keywords
- Calculate month-over-month position delta
- Flag any page with: position increase of 3+ places over 60 days
Quarterly deep audit:
- Pull GSC performance for all content pages (filter: content URLs only, not service pages)

- Create decay tier list:
- Active decay: Pages that lost 5+ positions in 90 days
